In this posting, I will discuss about DE on our Year, Month, Hour Natal Pillar and Luck Cycle and more.
Before I start, do you already know if you have DE in your natal chart or are you experiencing DE in your current Luck Cycle. Plot your Bazi chart here so that you can look at it yourself.

Death and Emptiness in Year Pillar
Take a look at an example of this sample chart:
The Day Master of this person is Earth Goat. Referring to the 60 Jia Zi, the DE of the Earth Horse is either a Rat or an Ox. In this chart’s Year pillar sits the Rat. Therefore, the Year for this person is void or partially void.
The Year pillar represents young age, from 1 – 20 years old. If DE appears here, it could mean this person led a solitary life during his/her younger days. It could also mean that this person rarely sees his/her grandparents.
Year pillar also represents social network. So during his/her younger days they didn’t have many close friends. On a more positively note, this person at a young age was exposed to many things that encouraged self-discovery.
To get a more accurate reading will depend on the stars that are present in the void pillar.
The same applies for this chart as the DE is also in the Year pillar. The star in the Year Heavenly Stem is Rob Wealth(RW), so during this person’s younger days he couldn’t connect well with his friends.
The Indirect Resource(IR) in the Year Hidden Stem could mean this person is into the study of metaphysics and spirituality.
Death and Emptiness in Month Pillar
Take a look at an example of this sample chart:
The void is in the Month pillar. The Month pillar represents career and parents. This person might feel that his career is unfulfilling even though he is doing well. The star in this pillar is Hurting Officer(HO). With the DE this person could also have the fear or inability to perform in the limelight.
The same applies for this chart as the DE is also in the Month pillar. The Direct Wealth(DW) in the Hidden Stem is void and this could cause the feeling of financialy unfulfill. Direct Resource(DR) in the Heavenly Stem is also affected.
Death and Emptiness in Hour Pillar
Take a look of this sample chart:
When DE is in the Hour pillar, it could mean there’s a difficulty in having children, there’s a distance or lack of connection with the children. It could also mean an issue with the staff, employees or subordinates. Going into the details in the pillar, the DE can also void the stars present in the Heavenly and Hidden Stems.
With DE in the Hour pillar, the Direct Wealth(DW) in the Heavenly Stem could mean that this person’s spouse in the later years became difficult to get along with and so he distanced himself. Or he could one day decide to donate all his money away. On the other hand, If this chart belongs to a woman, Eating God(EG) in the Hidden Stem represents her children and it could mean she’s not be closed to them.
Death and Emptiness in Luck Pillar
Take a look at this sample chart and the luck cycle:
During this period, this person could be quite lost. Changing from jobs to jobs, moving from house to house, not knowing what direction he wants to go in life. His 10 Gods in this pillar are Eating God(EG) and Direct Resource(DR), so this person will be out of ideas and conventional studies do not appeal to him. This also result him directionless. Direct Resource(DR) could also mean his health, especially his immune system, goes up and down all the time.
This lady during her 3rd Luck Cycle will encounter a DE in his Indirect Wealth(IW) both on the Heavenly Stem and Hidden Stem as well as Eating God(EG) and Seven Killing(7K). This could means No “direct income” luck, Can’t get help from superior while in work result in no job satifisation and cannot agree on things, marriage life won’t be happy

DE in Year pillar can mean, No inheritance, Leaving town early. Life may be difficult especially in the early stages (until reaches 16 Years) and also lack of support or stability. When you look at the Year pillar may have less affinity with the grandparents.

Hi, if i have DE in the luck pillar (Middle row) at age 35 & 45, what does it mean? Is this a continuous 10 years issue or just a year within those years

There is will 20 years of DE effect and some years will have more feeling depend it affect which pillar.

just to be more aware and always look at the good side. Eg if it is wealth related then maybe your wealth planning won’t be that good and you may be able to ask someone to plan for you but you have to also do your work too.

I have DE in my heavenly stem in the hour pillar. I am worried about my relationship with my children. Heavenly stem is EG yin fire (yin wood DM) and +DR and +RW in the hidden stem. Thank you for your help.

Don’t be so worried. Sometimes it could mean they may leave you early for example going aboard for studies and hence not so close to you.

Thank you for the response. My oldest daughter and I did have great disconnect and difficulty in her childhood but trying to repair now. My 10 year old I am worried will be taken from me emotionally by her dad saying bad things about me but we are currently close. I also had a baby girl pass away. I hope the future is better, I worry a lot about this being in hour pillar. Thank you again.

Good evening. Ding hai day master. I have DE in my hour pillar, Bing fire stem, and horse branch. Does this indicate issues with leadership?, or being distance with peers?, I am also in a 10 year luck period, gui water stem, and goat branch in DE. Thanks for your reply

Hi there, thanks for the sharing. Noted that handling DE is pretty much managing matters related to the affected elements mentally. Would this be the same as how we handle any clashes in the Branches? What is the difference between DE and the branch clashes/harms/?

I have 2 DE consecutively on luck pillar 51 and 61, 寅& 卯。I have EG, HO, RW, F & IW in these 2 luck pillars. I don’t have any DE on my natal chart. What does it mean in the next 20 years? No growth means death?

It could mean all of the sudden no direction on life or suddenly felt a big chunck of life empty depends whether the luck pillar clash or combo in any palace usually 51 and 61 will def combo or clash with month pillar.
Sometikes also like if the person got EG problem thn tht 10 year de on EG meaning no EG problem
Had to see overall and a consult will be better to see more details.

Hi Master, thank you for the sharing on DE, this really open up the confusion on DE. DE appear in my career pillar (always not able to satisfy myself) with 7K (Can’t be keep changing job) in heavenly and Hidden stem, plus IR and IW. Shall I start to re-group myself my start venture into Metaphysic?

Very interesting. You’re the first person online to say that DE also affects the heavenly stem. Does it always affect the stem of the DE or are there exceptions? Also Does DE also affects same elements found in a chart? For example geng on top of DE in LP. Are all gengs in the person’s chart affected? Thank you.

Hi. Thanks for the write up. I have been studying my Bazi deeper due to recent big changes and stagnation with career, finances and health issues. Although at the same time a huge lot of personal awakening and growth. I want to understand what perspective I need to adopt to make career and financial progress. I am Yin metal Day Master. I have Wei in DE in my year pillar (Ding Wei) and Wei – Chou clash with month pillar (Gui Chou). On it’s own, what effects does this have? Now I have just entered into a Ji Wei luck cycle with Wei again in DE, meaning double Wei DE. So is it that the Wei became even less accessible than before? Or the Wei double DE has nullified itself? Or the Chou is now double clashed? I would really appreciate if you shed some light on this for me. (Ding:7K; Ji:IR; Yi:IW) Thank you.

Thank you for the detailed response. You are right it has been quite an interesting ride. A few years ago I learned about and now focus more on QiMen Dun Jia to bring me more solutions and strategies. My life star path is 6 and so these challenges make some sense in turning my attention where it needs to be. It has not been easy or fun to reach this understanding, and being human I still have internal conflicts. But now hand in hand with the why, and the skill of how to strategies to make my lesson help for others, and for help to reach me. I was bemused to see this double DE and thanks for some confirmation in your response of what I’d already surmised. Your site and insights are a great tool. Thank you for all you do.
